Sarah Palin: Cheerleader for the Grand White Party
In the first 15 minutes of her “speech” last night- Sarah talked about her favorite subject: her. In stark contrast to Obama- who specifically said “It’s never been about me, it’s about you.”
She also quickly attacked his credentials as an “organizer” compared to her position of Mayor in “her hometown” (forgetting she was born in Idaho) where she had “real responsibility.”
Looking around the hall- I saw a lot of white people. With suits and ties. With signs. Without a remote hint of the many flavors of our country. I must hand it to Palin though- she had no problem reaching out to pander to the parents of “special needs” children. That vote- along with the State of Alaska, is sure to put John McCain over the top, not.
The stiffness of her delivery can be chalked up to her inexperience as a speaker. However, the lack of substance can not. For a person who is about to be judged as suitable for the number 2 person in our Country, she sounded more like a cheerleader than a quarterback or coach.
And, if being an organizer isn’t enough of a quality to lead our country- then I wonder why Barack Obama’s organized, grassroots political machine, which has out-raised any candidate from small donations- has won more states, and received more votes- than a whole bevy of “experienced candidates” who weren’t the long shots- is the envy of every politician, and the text book example of how to run a campaign?
I’m sorry I’m writing this before seeing the whole thing- but, I had to go to work, to pay the governor.
Interesting, bc most everyone, liberal and conservative, said she delivered a great speech. Maybe you are in the wrong profession, well maybe not profession, but maybe you are not qualified to judge people who have actually won elections and have had some success. The problem with you is that you can not leave you political beliefs out of the equation, always bringing up stupid comment like “white people.” Well, if you were to watch the whole thing, you would have seen plenty of people of many races – they do this on purpose BTW.
Also, she talked about herself, LIKE BIDDEN DID AH, bc most of the country does not know who she is. This is typical. She had plenty of substance compared to Obama or Bidden. Even you the genius should realize these speeches are all BS to begin with, but then again you can’t overcome your own ego to figure this out. You have become tiresome regarding Palin, and must be jealous bc she did actually win elections. I thought that you were a little more fair in your judging of people, evidently not. Again, all the networks said she gave a strong speech (not content, but delivery) yet you somehow know more that all the networks combine. You are the cheerleader, you probably look nice in a shirt. You are the Liberal Cheerleader of Dayton. Now go organize the west side, Obama.
Best Line: “one simple lesson: that this is America, and every woman can walk through every door…”
Yeah…unless it’s the door to an abortion clinic.
Being Pro-life is hardly the worst thing in the world. Geez, maybe they care about the unborn, ohhhhhh, bad bad person.
Wait? She doesn’t believe in the unethical act of killing living things? She would rather teach a foolproof method of preventing pregnancy? Despicable. Let’s launch baseless liberal attacks on her family and use the same arguments everyone has been using on Barack against her.
Yeah, I feel sorry for Biden. Not only does he have a trouble holding his tongue and using his own words, but he has to go up against her in a debate.
David,
Obama has written two books about himself and has authored no significant pieces of legislation- state or federal- in many years, yet you malign someone for an appropriate 15 minute introduction?
Weak.
Let’s see…
Her “values” include book banning, advocating for the teaching of creationism, being anti-choice and anti gay equality, saying that the war on terror is “a task from God”, denying funding for sex education, promoting abstinence only education (that method worked really well for her daughter Bristol, didn’t it?), and being a world class hypocrite.
Isn’t it funny that when some black teenager from the inner city gets pregnant, the evangelicals have an apoplectic fit because premarital sex is a sin and single parent homes are evil (and besides, conservatives shouldn’t have to give up any of their hard earned money to pay taxes to help single moms and their kids survive).
And notice how the bible bangers are always in a sanctimonious snit when some teen actress gets pregnant because it sends the wrong message to impressionable young fans, and because Hollywood and the “liberal media” are causing the erosion of our morals and the downfall of civilization.
But when it’s HER kid who’s pregnant, “Well, these things happen in the best of families, don’t they? We have our ups and downs, our joys and challenges just like all families…”
Excuse me while I puke.
And she wants some kind Christian Mother of the Year medal because her kid is getting married at 17 and keeping her baby as if three wrongs make a right.
Sheesh: little Trig isn’t the only one who’s retarded in that family.
Her own friggin’ mother-in-law won’t commit to voting for her…because she stabbed her in the back.
Yeah, she’s just what we need…if we want to live in a two-faced, glassy-eyed, holier than thou, stone age theocracy.
“little Trig isn’t the only one who’s retarded in that family”
Yep. This is probably going to be the new line of attack from the mainstream media. There is nothing really to attack her on. Let’s just make up lies about her record, her family, and then set women’s rights back about 30 years. (I’m) [editor] a fucking moron, In The ‘Burg
In the ‘Burg is a class act. First off, the word retarded is out of date, so maybe you could find an alternative word. Second, teenagers getting pregnant is a bad thing, but not the end of the world. I am really against Kids having kids, but you must embrace it after the fact. I don’t agree with a lot Palin has to say, but my point was she delivered a good speech and David’s criticisms are out of touch becasue they apply to EVERYONE who has ever given a speech (ie talking about themselves, family, etc.) All of these speeches are the same, maybe not the content, but the way they are designed and often delivered. Attacking her and not others is just bullshit.
Well, no one can argue that she didn’t do a very good job of teaching that “foolproof method of preventing pregnancy” in her own home. But she wants to force it on every other parent in the country.
Here’s an interesting read on Palin’s stretching of the truth: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/sep/03/attacks-praise-stretch-truth-at-gop-convention/
Keep on preaching that she is not qualified to do the job bc her daughter got pregnant. Wonder if all the single moms in America feel the same way.
BTW, not having sex is a fool proof method. And kids not listening is as common as a liberal crying in their Cheerios.
@Billy- no personal attacks.
@Bill- see the linkto the Washington Post that Allison posted.
I’ve never seen a cheerleader take on Obama and Biden so well. The Republicans get their own attack dog to counter “Change Agent” Joe Biden, and now she’s being belittled because of her gender? And, the reason Obama won’t talk about himself (and, he refuses to let us know him, whether you understand this or not) is because he has no substance. He is easily corruptible. Look at the company he keeps. That’s the judgment we’re going to put in the White House?
The Palin pick says more about McCain than anything. Minimal vetting of this VP candidate who a mere 20 months ago was a mayor of a town of 7,000 and who has demonstrated not an iota of interest or knowledge in foreign affairs during this time of interational turmoil shows McCain to be incredibuly reckless and the choice crassly political and not about governance. Sure Obama lacks experience, but at least he’s given real thought to the issues of our time. Can anyone honestly say the same for her?.
While politically she might be good for McCain, for the country it’s a disaster. McCain shows he rather “win an election than win the war” (and govern a country).
“real thought” qualifies me, David, Bill Maher and Rhine Mclin. She, frankly, is not qualified. Obama, frankly, is not qualified either. But experience is over rated, and they have such a large staff that in all actuality Roseanne Barr could run our country surrounded by the right people.
David, no response to the fact that Bidden talked about himself, you know, a kid from Scranton, with a speech impediment, who bloodied the noses of kids…… came home every night on the train….. let me introduce my family….. Oh, that is right, you only pick and chose you BS arguments. You should look in the mirror, but then again you might scare yourself. You are wrong to pick on Palin in regards to talking about herself. And you admitted that you only watched half of it…….typical liberal.
also funny how you don’t comment on the nice comment from – in the burg.
“Sheesh: little Trig isn’t the only one who’s retarded in that family.”
Evidently you support this and support the making fun of special needs kids. Way to stand up for those who can’t defend themselves, once again you pick and chose, pick and chose.
Found this on another site…
PALIN: “There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate.”
THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.
A few other things from Palin’s speech struck me as odd. She, Rudy & others keep bringing up that as a Mayor and Governor she has executive experience – which Biden & Obama do not.
As far as I know – McCain doesn’t have that experience either. Is she saying he’s unqualified?
And if you use that logic, no offense, but it means Rhine McLin is qualified to be VP…or Julie Vann of Beavercreek etc. In no way do I intend that as a slam against either Mayor, I’m just pointing out the hole in that logic.
I was appalled by Guliani – and he was the guy I most wanted to vote for when it all started. I thought he behaved like a sophomoric class clown who got so caught up in the response from the audience that he was laughing at his own mean jokes.
I am embarrassed by the Republican Party – they act like the former popular kids at a high school reunion years later – they still think they are all that and then some, but don’t realize how bitter, petty & ridiculous they sound. When did we become the party of sarcasm, mockery and fear?
I thought Palin delivered a good speech. What I’d like to know is how much of it was her message and how much was the speech writer’s?
I still think Obama has it right – you can disagree and still treat each other with dignity. I hope he continues to take the high road, because the Republicans are on the low road and making fools of themselves.
To “in the burg” all I can say about your tasteless comment is karma is a bitch – better hope she doesn’t bite you in the *** after that one. The parents of special needs children have so many battles to fight, they don’t need to battle ignorance and cruel comments.
Hy Giene,
Hey, better check out this link if you really believe everyone thought Sarah Palin delivered “a great speech.”
http://community.nytimes.com/article/comments/2008/09/04/us/politics/04repubday.html?s=1&pg=1
Also try a search for Sarah Palin here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/ for a broader spectrum on what “everyone thinks.”
It was unfortunate that In the burg made the choice of phrases he/she did, (“not the only retarded one”) for it gave the hecklers something to hang him/her on in what was otherwise an excellent post.
Of course, linguistically speaking, ‘Burg is totally correct. Given the chance, Palin and McCain will retard this country back to the stone age.
I wasn’t making fun of the kid.
I was making fun of his mother.
And for the record, I also had a Down’s syndrome pregnancy. It spontaneously aborted at 5 months. I had no indication that there was anything wrong with it until then. Even if I would have known, I’m not sure what I would have chosen to do about it. But having that choice is MY RIGHT.
Sarah Palin is within her rights to make the choices and sacrifices she wants to make. She is not within her rights to impose those same requirements on me.
That is the crux of the problem: conservatives can live the lifestyle they choose just fine with a liberal government. No liberal is going to tell them that they can’t worship however they want, or have as many kids as they want, or homeschool them, or teach them baseless, backward ideas about the world around them. We might think you’re a little strange for doing it, but we won’t tell you that you can’t do it.
But conservatives feel the need to tell liberals what they can and cannot do. They aren’t happy to just practice their own beliefs. No. They want to impose them on everyone else: Women can’t have abortions, homosexuals can’t marry, homosexuals can’t adopt, single people can’t adopt, you have to teach pseudoscience, you need to subject everyone to Christian prayers in public schools, you can’t read books with offensive ideas or language in them, you can’t give young people adequate information to protect themselves from unwanted pregnacies and STDs…
THAT is why she is not qualified for the job.
You are wonderful in the burg.
“I wasn’t making fun of the kid. I was making fun of his mother.” The problem is that in the process, by using the “R” word, you make fun of special needs people everywhere. You’re using an outdated description of their blight to mock someone else, and in the process, you insulted Trig, his mother and the families of those with relatives like him. You may not have intended any malice, but it just wasn’t cool. Not all conservatives fit the mold you describe, not all liberals are as radical on the other side of the pendulum. I think the overall problem with this country is that the lunatic fringe is making so much noise during elections that the majority in the middle loses hope and doesn’t vote – so the fringe wins. I’ll be honest, I feel like McCain’s choice of Palin is an insult to womens’ intelligence. Does he think we’re going to vote for her just because she is a woman? If that was the case, Hilary would have won the primary. We have brains, we see that we’re being played and with a relatively unknown former beauty queen when there are so many other well qualified Republican women who have paid their dues and have a track record and have been overlooked. Yes she’s spunky and has confidence, but that doesn’t mean she’s qualified. She just has access to the Alaskan pipe line! I’m just really disappointed in the RNC planners – they’ve put up a bunch of old white men for the most part asking us to vote for another good ole boy. I respect McCain and his leadership – but we can’t run this race with an old horse. Obama may not be the best candidate, but I believe he has a good chance of reaching across party lines. Clearly his message is resonating with the American public or he wouldn’t be where he is today. One last thing – I can’t believe the Republicans are mocking him for being an eloquent speaker – after 8 years with “W” – I think we’ve earned… Read more »
Gene said “Keep on preaching that she is not qualified to do the job bc her daughter got pregnant. Wonder if all the single moms in America feel the same way.”
I was a single mom from the age of 16 (I don’t count my 1-year teenage marriage, it was as successful as Bristol Palin’s will be). But then I’m not claiming you should elect me to run the greatest country in the world.
The Republican Party is out of touch with issues regarding homosexuals, adoption, and other issues, however many Republicans are not out of touch with these issues. When I talk to people who are Republican (Midwestern Republicans), they could care less about many things the so called “party” stands for – this is why they are losing votes. Most Republicans I know want small government, less taxes, and want people to have all the freedoms in the world. Social issues are not as important to a typical Republican, often they have a “do what ever you want as long it does not affect me” attitude. The Rep Party, however, does lend itself to the BS notions regarding homosexuals. That is where they lose a lot of ground.
In regards to abortion I would have to say that although I protect a woman’s right I still think it is a horrible thing. Even Bill Maher recognizes the barbaric nature of such decisions. There is a valid point for people to be disgusted with abortion. But to each their own.
And Liberals do interfere with people and their religious beliefs – I say let people do what they want to do, so long it does not break the law. Have you ever seen the loons who show up during Mass to take communion – they destroy the church and service. If that is not an interruption then I don’t know what is. And if you know any of them, send them to my church bc they won’t get out with a good ol’ beat down. I will confess my sins after Mass that day.
What is wrong with having a lot of kids? It seems to me the poor have more kids and can not afford them (Democrats) and the rich have few kids by comparison and they can afford them (both Democrats and Republicans)
Oh, you mean like the guy in Florida last month who didn’t consume his Christ Krispie at the altar but took it back to his seat to show it to his non-Catholic friend and was then accused of kidnapping Jesus and committing a hate crime by the Diocese for refusing to give it back to them on demand?
It’s a CRACKER, people!!!
This is who we want running the country??
If McCain wins, will the Palins move into the Vice President’s quarters (I believe it’s Longworth House)? Because if such is the case, it’ll constitute the post-modern version of “The Beverly Hillbillies”: unemployed bohunk husband, unwed teenage mother and her redneck fiance(?)… How many Mr. Drysdales will the Secret Service need to keep these Yahoos from being a total embarrassment to the United States?
Funny who you call rednecks – most of you who post live in a sewer called Dayton and have not cut your lawn this year – yet there are plenty of beer cans in the front yard, only until your neighbor picks them up to get some cash. Go to get another tattoo, smoke you a Marlboro, polish that gun, feed that pit bull, don’t clean up after your pit bull, paint your car with ceiling paint, take a mean shit. This group should not be the group that calls others rednecks.
Burg – it is not a cracker. And if you don’t know what it is to “take it back to your seat” then I advise you, since you are not Catholic, to Shut TF Up. This is the Body of Christ. There also is the Blood of Christ. I know you don’t get it, so why don’t you leave the Catholics alone. Again, you are welcome to come to my church, act like a punk and I will be in confession for a week. I know I will be forgiven.
Also, Palin is not Catholic, and Catholics don’t run this country. So what in the smell are you talking about, BURGY?
What I’m talking about are religious fanatics of any ilk, stripe, or flavor.
In MY church, we don’t make death threats because someone eats their cookie outside of the designated area.
Speaking of cookies, I’m hungry. I wonder how the body of Christ would go with some of those cheese curds David mentioned a while back…
The ‘redneck’ fiance is self-professed. It was on his My Space site until the McCain Campaign took it down. He’s an angry young man, as is the right of any teenager. Better that than a bitter old geezer. I’m not naming names, but…
I think Palin is a good fit for this area. She could come right out of Dayton area politics.
Anti-abortion, anti-gay, snarky, good at getting earmarks from DC. Sounds a lot like Mike Turner.
And she has that briar thing going too, a bit.
It is not a cookie, it is the Body of Christ. Before the Eucharist it is a wafer. After the Eucharist it is the Body of Christ. This is not a symbolic thing, Catholics believe it is the Body of Christ. Before the Eucharist it is wine. After the Eucharist it is the Blood of Christ. Again, these are NOT symbols. Other churches may use this as a symbol, but in the Catholic Church it is more than a sin to accept Christ (faslely, btw) and then put him in your pocket. You insult, for lack of a better word, the Catholic Church when you do this. I recommend that you do not take communion.
Hy Giene,
Actually, Palin was born and cbristened in the Roman Catholic church. (Aw, you didn’t read those links I sent you, did you?) Then, as a teen she became . . . are you ready? Everybody sitting down? Keep those tongues still a moment: PENTECOSTAL! She left the Assembly of God church in Alaska when she ran for Guv’ner, but she still attends an “independent” Bible church, of essentially Pentecostal stripe. One of her first “accomplishments” as Guv’ner is that she re-named the street (on which her former Church is located) “Riley Street” after her pastor. Isn’t that sweet?
The Beverly Hillbillies analogy is so apt. Nice touch to have Baby Daddy on the stage at the RNC, don’t you think? Have you see the photos of SP and her gurl children checking out the master bedroom at the Guvner’s mansion? Oh, the visions.
There are many women like myself (professional, educated, community involved and a mom) who are thrilled by the entry of Sarah Palin in our political environment.
I just love her. Get over it.
^
NKA just confirms what Im saying…Dayton is Palin Country. Yay.
@@@@
Gene is correct (he must be Catholic, like I was or sort of am). The theological term for what he is talking about is “transubstantiation”. That is why you were kneeling and had do bow your head when the the priest said “this is my body”, as the wafer became the Body of Christ.
Gene, I understand the concept of transubstantiation, and I respect your right to hold an irrational belief like that. But I do not have to respect the belief itself. In fact, as a critical thinker in an open society, I have an obligation to examine such irrational beliefs and reject/denounce/ridicule them as I see fit.
Tolerance just means that you can be as delusional and pious as you want to be and I will adopt a live and let live philosophy. And in exchange, I can be as godless and irreverent as I want to be (for the time being, anyway, until the religious right really takes over).
But tolerance does NOT mean that I can’t giggle if someone smuggles Jesus (in biscuit form) out of the church in a zip-loc bag, and the God Squad calls in a team of hostage negotiators to handle the crisis.
And as for whether or not I take communion, that is between me and God. It’s not for you to decide. But how typical of you to appoint yourself to make that call.
NKA,
If you think people should just “get over it,” you’re on the wrong blog, my dear. And if you are all the things you claim to be and seriously are a supporter of Mrs. Palin, perhaps you should do some more research. Your children won’t thank you if you help to elect her.
How we’ll we get a President Palin:

Thanks for the comic banter your site provides David, Does Clevon live on the east end?
To be fair to Gov. Palin and her speech delivery, McCain’s speechwriters wrote her speech before they knew it’d be her that delivered it. As such, it’s only normal that she’d have a bit of trouble delivering a speech that wasn’t written for her speaking style.
Putting Words In Palin’s Mouth

(h/t Atrios)
That said, I wish she could have skipped some of the red meat (Giuliani threw out quite enough) and focused more on some specifics of what she plans to do as VP. In this era of more hands-on VPs like Cheney and Gore (and even 41) it’d be nice to hear if she planned on continuing the era of active VPs or if she planned on returning to the more passive style of days of yore.
Didn’t watch or hear any of it but I am going to say it was probably just the same old rhetoric, ending with Gold Bless America?
Anyway I love John McCain for picking Mrs. Palin thank goodness for the maverick.
Governor/Senator debate it has been a long long time since a senator has been successful running for President. That is what made this race so strange, with a women Alaskan governor it just got stranger.
I will let all of you in on a secret the conservatives want world government, it’s called Christianity. Enjoy.
Welcome back JR- missed you.
Watched the rest of the speech to the thousands of white people with the two (yes, 2) African Americans in attendance last night. Good thing I wrote this before watching the last, half. Snarky, condescending and devoid of anything resembling what we call “vision.” IF that’s the best her speech writers can do- we’re in deep shit if she ever has to tell this county where we’re headed.
@John- “the intro to idiocracy” was absolutely ROFLOL. Thansk
Burgy – you can do what ever you want, but the person who takes communion and then proceeds to put it in a zip-loc bag is stepping over the line. You know it and I know it. Just bc you think it is goofy, fine, but why would you enter someone else’s sanctuary to purposely piss on it? You can laugh all you want but the person committing the act is in the wrong. That is where the line is crossed. You can have what ever opinion you want.
Typical of a person who is disrespectful to others and most likely his/herself. You are the person that continues to put the wedge in life. And for that you shall be the one who ultimately pays the price for such wedge. Enjoy.
Gene-o:
A: The kid who did this was Catholic. He wasn’t “pissing in someone else’s sanctuary”.
B. For all you know, you and I go to the same church.
and
C. When you say something on here that deserves my respect, you will have it.
Until then, go have some Cheez-Itz—or is that Jeez-Itz?
Amen
After reading through all these posts, ranging in topics from Sarah Palin to retardation to church to crackers, I’ve come to only one conclusion… I’m [editors redaction- don’t call other posters names] an asshole…
Yep
We don’t go to the same church bc you think it is a cracker.
The kid committed a sin. He may be Catholic (God bless him) but he did sin. I am just saying if someone does it on purpose from outside the church (who is an adult, unlike the kid here) they are disrespecting the church. You can disrespect it all you want, do it in my church while I am there and I will be in confession for hours after our encounter. Enjoy again Burgy a SAPD!
Update on African American Delegates:
“This year, 36 delegates are black, according to the Center’s study.
That’s down 78.4 percent from 2004, when 167 of the Republican delegates were black.
The 36 delegates this year represent the lowest number of black Republican delegates in 40 years, according to the report.
In comparison, the Democratic National Convention in Denver this year drew 1,087 black delegates out of 4,440 total delegates.
That’s up from the 886 black delegates in 2004.”

At a “breakfast panel” strategy meeting yesterday, Ken Blackwell and Karl Rove said (and I’m paraphrasing here) they might as well give up on the black vote because blacks are going to vote for Obama based solely on race.
But all is not lost. Blackwell referred to Hispanics as a “real, exploitable opportunity” for republicans.
Rove and Blackwell…where have I heard those names before?
And they’re laying out McCain’s strategy to “change’ the GOP…
I think not.
If McCain is elected, the Palins will move into the vice-presidential home that Nelson Rockefeller set up in the former Naval Observatory at the foot of Calvert Street.
