I wasn't even to the pool yet this morning when my phone rang and I got an earful for yesterdays post. I won't tell you called, but, let's break down a few details I might not have made clear yesterday.
The Police Substation ruse
In my post I asked why are we paying $300K in rent to RTA for this new "substation" right next to the bus hub when we own a building a block away?
Some folks say, "well, you need it that close to the bus hub, because that's where all the criminal scum are" except, let's be clear, this substation is only temporary. The new one which is supposed to be done in 2030 is at the corner of 4th and St. Clair where the diner and the steam plant are. That's just as far away from the crime hub as the Paru Tower that we already own- and have put over $6M in it with NO PUBLIC USE EVER IDENTIFIED. If that isn't evidence of why to fire the city manager- I don't know what is.
So, the location isn't a good reason to give all that money to RTA- unless it's just a payoff to the people who can't run a bus system very well to begin with. Did you ever wonder why you no longer see paid advertising on the outside of buses? It's because they don't like making money (ads used to bring in about $6-7M a year- just on buses- since we never mastered providing real bus shelters anywhere like in other cities that have walls- that usually have ads on them).
The "Economic Development Lie" about the law firm
If Horenstein, Nicholson & Blumenthal, LPA can't fix up their office without the working men and women of Dayton giving them a grant, maybe they should move out of town. Currently housed in the Caresource 2 building at 220 E. Monument, this is subsidizing another huge company who doesn't need as much of their space since Covid taught them the value of remote work.
The $350K or we'll take our jobs and leave line is Trumpian in the lies department. And, to be clear, there is no application form, process, or rubric to grade the value of this "economic development" assistance for companies in the City of Dayton. And, we've yet to see any clawbacks. We just keep paying for the rich to get richer- and to give away real estate that we paid too much for in the first place (the new Liberty Charter High School at the Corner of Wayne and Wyoming- where Dickstein sold a prime lot for $85K when she paid 10x that for it and never marketed it to anyone.).
Show me the application, the rubric, the evaluation process first, before you blindly go giving our money to Caresource indirectly through these lawyers.
Remember when we paid to demolish the old Dayton Daily News building on Ludlow for that fantastic new Sinclair Student housing? And all the development that came with it? Of course you don't. We ended up giving the gem of the parcel to Steve Rauch, and paying Bladecutters to backfill and finish what Rauch failed. (Dickstein again at her finest).
btw- I also got cc'd on an email from some neighborhood activists that echoed my complaints about these two dumb deals- and they were cc'd to the whole leadership crew of city hall. As usual- no response.

Back in 2022 when I was running against Mike Turner with no help from the "Democratic Party" I followed the money- at least Turner's 27 billionaire donors and put up a post listing them on Elect Esrati.

I got an updated one today. Not that it shows any difference, other than all the precincts that no one filed in. So, yes, you can run as a write in any of these precincts. First identify if you live in one of the vacant ones. Then turn in the form and say you are running as a write in, then vote for yourself- and get a few neighbors to do the same- and voila.

Update: The State Appeals — Not to Seek Truth, but to Save Face in the Kevin Wright trial
You’d think, after a 44-page decision granting Kevin Wright a new trial, the State of Ohio would do the obvious thing: either retry the case or walk away from a conviction that Judge Wall found unreliable.
Instead, they filed an appeal.
Not because they suddenly discovered new evidence. Not because they uncovered some legal breakthrough. But because that’s what bureaucracies do when their work is exposed: they circle the wagons and try to make the embarrassment go away.
What the State is asking the 2nd District to do
The State’s appeal boils down to two requests:
- Reverse Judge Wall entirely and reinstate Wright’s conviction as-is; or
- If the court won’t do that, then at least salvage Counts 1 and 2 and limit any new trial to Count 3 (the December 8, 2019 incident tied to the DNA and cell phone evidence).
That second request tells you everything you need to know. They’re not coming in strong. They’re coming in hoping the appellate court will let them “keep” most of the conviction even after the trial court found the defense was ineffective and the result unreliable.
The problem: this doesn’t fix the mess — it just hides it
Judge Wall didn’t grant relief because someone missed a deadline or filed the wrong form. She granted it because the original trial was structurally broken:

I watched those prosecutors in court. I watched them fish, fumble, repeat the same questions, and fail to land punches against witnesses who were actually qualified and prepared. They didn’t look like people defending a solid conviction. They looked like people trying to protect a narrative.
What happens next
The appeal is now in the 2nd District’s hands. And it matters—because if the court narrows this to “Count 3 only,” the State will claim “victory” without having to clean up the underlying incompetence that infected the entire case.
But the public should understand what’s really going on:
This isn’t about justice.
It’s about reputation management.
And it’s another attempt to paper over a hot mess that should never have reached a jury the first time.
