Not that any previous chairmen were any good either. Or that our Board of Elections makes it easy for the average person to figure out what elected offices are coming up to run for- or how to do it.
Because, participation isn’t something any of them want.
It’s much better when the two parties can strike a deal that says, Dems don’t run anyone for Sheriff, Republican’s don’t run anyone for prosecutor. Judges have lifetime elections – unless they really screw up bad. And, voters don’t need to actually have that many choices- no matter how stupid the jurisdiction is. Like why the hell does Jefferson Township have a school board, superintendent, treasurer etc- for less than 300 students? Or why does the Montgomery County Educational Service Center even have an elected board (despite the board having to live in 3 spots with 20 acres each or some such non-sense). While other public bodies with large tax dollar budgets like the Montgomery County Jobs and Family Services, Learn To Earn, Metroparks or Dayton Metro Library have zero elected oversight.
The “democracy” we practice is far from what we preach. And the cost of all these local banana republics drives our governmental overhead through the roof. How many websites do the 51 jurisdictions, 17 school districts etc need in a county? It’s why I started Reconstructing Dayton back in 2020 or so.
If Mohamed Al-Hamdani ran a functioning political party, he’d have candidates for every race, and a support system to get them elected. The party would know what all the filing deadlines were, when which seats were coming open, and actually have a plan. The Board of Elections (which he now sits on) would have this info posted on their website at a minimum. But, noooooo.
So I went and grabbed the current listing of all candidates and openings and looked up party affiliations for all the offices that people have filed for. If no ones filed- who knows that the position will be on the ballot- and maybe, someone can “run” as a write-in and get elected with 5 votes. Note, while some races have passed the filing deadline, others may still be open. The number in parentheses is the number of seats available- so Brookville Council has 3 seats- and only 1 candidate so far etc.
