Went to Taqueria Mixteca on E. Third Street today- you should too. Ever since I first tasted “genuine” Mexican tacos at the now long-gone “El Guapo Taco” – I’ve missed the cilantro, onion and beef version served with lime. Now, I have a source.
The old burger joint was filling up by noon- the service is at the tables, the menus are bi-lingual (although the staff may not be).They have a $5 lunch special that should fill anyone up.

Dayton has a growing Mexican community- and it’s nice to see something more authentic than Elsa’s, Carmels, or Pepitos popping up.
Ooh, you missed the best part! All the little bottles of sauces they bring to your table. Yum, yum, yum, and soooo reasonable.
The food there is poor. I actually got sick after eating there once. The best Mexican place that I’ve been to in town (aside from home cooking) is Laredo, over in the old Macaroni Grill, off of 725 in Washington Township. Their rice is pretty close to home cooking.
I’ll have to give it another try. I was there when they had just opened.
I’ve run into a few other taco options around town. Chef Leo’s on Wyoming, which serves barely edible Chinese food during the week, serves tacos on Sunday complete with limes. Better yet, during soccer season, several mobile units are in the lot in front of the park on the corner of Steve Whalen and Wyoming. My favorite so far is the shabbiest one. Look for peeling white paint on plywood and you have arrived. You might want to stick to shredded beef or pork(for food safety)but they were excellent! A new find is inside the La Mohicanna market on Troy street. They have very decent tacos.
It is nice to have more ethnic diversity in Dayton. It makes life more interesting and definitely improves food choices!
