The nadir of American “politics”?

This election, Nov. 4, 2014, may have been where America hit political rock bottom. At least I hope so. Estimates of $3.6 billion wasted on what amounted to an auction of elected office. Voters, disgusted with the lack of respectable and credible candidates stayed home for the most part. Those who voted often felt dirty.

If you need proof that those running this clown show have lost touch with reality, from this morning’s N.Y. Times:

“Barack Obama has our country in a ditch, and many of his lieutenants running for the Senate were right there with him,” said Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee. “The punishment is going to be broad, and it’s going to be pretty serious.”

“The punishment” for serving our country? The punishment for trying to work in a system that’s been derailed by dirty money and gerrymandered districts? Where our government actually shut down because of the lack of the most basic skills critical to civilized society- compromise?

I was once chided by none other than former Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin for talking about politicians- when she corrected me with her definition of herself as an elected representative. When will our “elected representatives” start acting like representatives again? What happened to the statesman?

In the city of Dayton- less than 24,000 people voted- of the approximately 100,000 registered voters. Granted I believe the total to be inflated as much as 25,000- but that still says more than half stayed home.

As to our country being “in a ditch” and placing blame unilaterally on Democrats- I truly wonder what we were in when Barack Obama took office? The economy had just disintegrated thanks to Wall Street being run like a casino. We’re still at war, with zero end in sight- even though we still are pretending we’re not. And, while numbers of unemployed are low- we’ve taken so many people off the rolls- and accepted the fact that most workers are now woefully underemployed in sub-living wage hell, that our economy is nothing but a house of cards, ready to implode once again.

The stock market is near record highs- just waiting for a “correction” that will wipe trillions off our general net worth- and yet, the chairman of the Republican party is doing a happy dance with his new-found power.

For the first time in 22 years- the idea of running for office, to make a difference, turns my stomach. If this is the way the game will be played from here on out- it’s one that disgusts me.

If anyone who was elected yesterday, truly believes that it’s because of their skill and merit- other than perhaps Fred Strahorn and Jim Butler, who both faced hapless opposition, they should be ashamed of themselves.

We’re all losing when political office is bought- not won, when campaigns are about mud, not ability and when choices are almost always the lesser of two evils.

Spoken like a poor loser . . . you skirt is showing, democrat.

Now it’s time for the democrats to be titled the obstructionist although Harry Reid was the force behind gridlock. Now the sky is falling, the stock market is going to crash . . . in spite of overseas markets rallying in support of change today Mr. Esrati is burying his coin in a coffee can somewhere in South Park because the dems lost the Senate.

David, it’s simply called balance and our country has been doing it for more decades than you or I have been around. It’s a healthy thing and long over due. Bush about destroyed the republican brand for life, now Obama is doing the same to the democrats (how many campaigners accepted him to help in their campaigns after all).

Get a grip, your party lost this time (on the national level) but Dayton continues to be a stronghold for democrats no matter what. Cheer up. Lots of us (including me) will still vote for you for local office because we hate the status quo, but you might attract more independents, libertarians, and republicans, if you were an independent. After all the dems are never going to give you money and get behind you. Why hang on to that moniker?

John Holdren

David, kind sir. I appreciate the pain, anger, and frustration you expressed above. I do not, however, agree with you about some of your interpretations of the causes for your feelings. I eagerly await your measured response to this election after your disgust with the results of this election wears off. I also invite you to consider running as a Libertarian–especially after you have outgrown some of your statist and control-oriented leanings. You have a lot to offer the citizens of Dayton and I think you need an effective channel for your energies. I can’t fix your problems with republicans–I share some of them. I hope to see you learn to revile the disguised long-term intentions of democrats who follow hard-core leftists. Hang in there!

Close to $4 billion spent on this election cycle…who won the election? Money won.

Yup, John, you're right. Money won this election. Just as it won the election in 2012. And 2010. And 2008. And 2006…….

Here in Florida, our Governor, a moral cretin named Rick Scott who made his fortune heading a health care company that received the largest fine for Medicaid fraud, spent $75 million of his own money to get elected 4-years back and raised $100 million for his re-election. in the last 2 weeks of the campaign, the Miami Herald reported: “Gov. Rick Scott was spending the equivalent of $1,200 a minute every day, every hour on TV ads, and it was moving numbers.”

I tell you, Mother Teresa herself couldn’t be elected in our corrupt money drenched political system. Thank you Citizens United.

the voting this time around shows nothing is changing. This is all about controlling the masses. The rule of law for these elite controlling individuals is breaking the law, obstruction of justice and no checks to make sure things are done right. Corruption, crime is their rule of law. Using diversion tactics, coercion, manipulating the voting process and accusing individuals of their current and past crimes to cover-up and throw under the proverbial carpet of acts of TREASON against the people. They should be prosecuted but the prosecutors use their power and influence to, instead of solving crimes, the criminals get unlimited protection and free slate to continue their acts! This is not a free society anymore. It is very close or is a dictatorship. This is a nationwide problem that is not going away anytime soon. What do you think will happen in 2 years? The seats of both house and senate will have expired terms and voters will vote with anger once again putting democrats in power once again without realizing the best person should be voted in or out. This process does not happen. However it all starts locally here in Dayton Ohio just like any other city or town in any county in any state in the union. Our republic or democracy is in serious jeopardy! Money can buy the best politician with an empty suit at any price with the taxpayers money with the masses unaware what is happening behind closed doors with the sunshine laws! The sun should shine for the public to see and it is a crime to hide it! Here is a proposal that we start a new form of government that puts the people (the people are the government and we all need to remember we need to to take the stand and lead this movement by forming our own panels voted by the average citizen like you and me with the power to indict the high treason crimes that have taken place with these individuals using common sense and decency to vote them out and recall them or place… Read more »
