The economy is bad. Unemployment in Dayton is high. Want to treat the family to something special for next to nothing? The answer used to be to go sit outside the Fraze Pavilion [1] and listen to the show.
Well no more:
People who like to listen to Fraze Pavilion concerts without paying to get in are the targets of a new plan to end the practice.
The city and some private property owners near the Fraze, 695 Lincoln Park Blvd., want to prohibit trespassing in areas along Lincoln Park Boulevard between Isaac Prugh Way and Commons Way. The boulevard splits at Isaac Prugh Way and Commons Way and surrounds the concert venue.
“Private property is not going to be available,” Mary Beth Thaman, Kettering’s director of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department, told Kettering City Council members during their Tuesday, March 9, work session.
The city plans to add no trespassing signs in these private property areas and increase police patrol when necessary, City Manager Mark Schwieterman said. The city also wants to make sure the sidewalks near these private properties are opened up for traveling pedestrians.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Fraze, it’s an outdoor concert venue in the middle of a beautiful boulevard. It seats 4,300 and has free shows as well as huge national acts. Sheryl Crowe did her live DVD there a few years back- it’s a nice joint. Personally, I prefer the lawn seating to the front row- or the bleachers in the back, but, for some- the best seats are along the sides of the boulevard stage left or right.
It’s these areas that the City is now going to turn into a no-fan zone. You won’t even be able to park your pickup and sit in the back from the way it sounds. Ah, America- home of the free- only sometimes.
The area to the rear- where the gates are, used to be a good spot too- but, over the years, they have moved the ropes further and further out- to push you nearer to the fountains- that run during shows and create “white noise” to sort of kill the sound. They also close off the access to the public restrooms to anyone other than ticket holders- all of this helping create the problems that they now want to solve with draconian measures.
It was 9 a.m. when Greg showed up- wanting to tape today’s edition of the Dayton Grassroots Daily Show on this very topic. (We can’t upload video till everyone leaves the office- since it eats bandwidth.)
I understand the qualms of the private property owners, however, there may be room for compromise. After all, the taxpayers did fund this beautiful facility- and their ability to benefit from it should be maximized even if they can’t afford a ticket.

And who is at fault for this? The people that were getting the free benefit. Tearing up the landscaping and leaving their trash. How would you feel about people spreading their blanket on your front lawn, peeing in your bushes, then leaving beer cans when they’re gone.

Last I checked- peeing in the bushes and leaving trash are both crimes. Parking in the street- and sitting in your truck bed- not. Banning everyone, because you can’t enforce the laws on the books- is an embarrassment.
DE lives in SP, where peeing in bushes and leaving trash in public/private areas is the norm. But he is right, those are crimes and people should go to jail for such crimes. I think if you are over the age of 18 and pee or leave trash then you are so worthless that a little jail time may help. Besides, I have sat outside once. It was not worth it, just something to do to kill time. Buy a ticket, be an adult.
Host a ticket subsidy benefit concert for the interlopers. It could be a Maoist-style struggle session. The Most Metroid Creative Crass ‘catalysts’ will subject themselves to constructive ridicule and ritual humiliation. They’ll have to wear washroom attendant uniforms, white connical hats and signs that say “Gullible”. Or else Bill Pout et al could cough up the tens of thousands of dollars that were uncritically handed over to Richard Four-flusher.

How about we do away with “public” space, roads and venues and let the “owner” of the “private property” do as they please? Just a thought.

@Jesse: Your input’s not crazy, at least not here. Robert Vigh’s already advocated here for the privatization of all roads and public services. Esrati.com seems to be the cool place for Dayton Libertarians to hang out.
DL can’t stomach the thought of not taxing people to death and spending other people’s money. Esrati is the same way. Liberals just can’t look beyond other people’s money and the potential to tax them. All of it is great until you run out of other people’s money.
No, Gene, I just have yet to hear a detailed explanation of how a country with no public roads whatsoever is going to work. Every single road, including Main Street and every street in every subdivision, a toll road? No public roads whatsoever? Robert and now Jesse are in favor it, but no one has explained how it would work.

Why explain it to you? You are too busy worring about other people’s money and licking your chops to tax their money. That is my concern for you. Privately owned roads are about 645th on the list of things you should worry about. You should reflect on why you are such a liberal and want to tax everything to death, bc if you can’t get passed that you would never understand privately owned roads. Baby steps DL.

Gene, why explain it to me? Because if Jesse and Robert really want roads to be privatized, they better be able to explain it to people; otherwise they’ll never get what they want.
My copy of The Privatization of Roads & Highways by Walter Block arrived today. I haven’t had much time to look at it but wanted A) to report that I did get it and B) to note that I’m finding Block’s opening premise in his first chapter to be rather interesting. He claims that were all roads and highways privatized with no government interference automobile fatalities would be reduced significantly from the 40,000+/year we currently have in the United States. Color me skeptical, but I’m willing to read what he has to say. I’ll report back as I progress through the book.

We should keep others property better then ours…pick up your darn trash!
Maybe they would consider a policy of opening up the “public spaces” for shows that are sold out or close to it. I would LOVE to see Sheryl Crow, but the show was sold out before I had my opportunity to purchase tickets. I would still love to take a lawn chair and sit within ear shot. Perhaps a policy similar to the MLB and airtime in their surrounding areas on TV… it’s only aired if it’s a sold out game. I sure hope that this decision is revisited, but I’m not holding my breath.
