15 Oct. 2009 the candidates participated in a “forum” at the South East Priority Board Offices.

It gets interesting when Gary asks why the negative campaigning- and responds to it- and when a citizen, Polly Wellbaum gives her own speech on the subject towards the end.

Glad to see David continues to support “tea party” style political stunts at public meetings. Polly Wellbaum is not some average person who came to this meeting upset about the McLin mailer. She is a plant, the wife of Leitzell volunter Jeff Wellbaum. She was sent to this meeting to be disruptive and distract voters from the issues. Just as tea baggers attempted to disrupt town halls this summer in the hopes of stopping health insurance reform. This is clearly astro turf politics, not a grass roots citizen outcry, as David would like you to believe. Leitzell’s volunteers simply packed the meeting, just as the tea baggers do. David, can we expect to see you and Polly shouting at Sherrod Brown or some other Congressman in an effort to stop health insurance reform?

I told Polly she was out of line after the meeting. I just provided the video- unedited- and commented that it happened. I was heckled mid speech last night by a part of the presenting organization- the guy behind the camera. IT happens.
Most of the time- I ignore you and your friend Molly Darcy, but, on this, you are shooting the messenger.
@ Lynn: “astroturfing” generally implies that some larger corporation or special interest group is setting up the event to appear to be “grassroots”. It’s a term that’s used to invalidate legitimate questions and arguments out of hand… the new political correctness. “This is astroturfing, therefore I don’t actually have to respond to your point.” Moreover, what big business or special interest is funding Mr. Leitzell’s campaign? Are his campaign contributations greater than the coffers of the Montgomery County Democratic Party? He (and Mr. Esrati) are standing up against an entrenched power elite of sorts using legitimate grassroots tactics.
“Leitzell’s volunteers packed the meeting”, you said. Where were Rhine McLin’s supporters? Shouldn’t the fact that he has such a large following on a comparatively small budget tell you something?
This was not orchestrated in the least. If you know my wife, you will know that she will speak her mind on what she believes is right. I nor no one else can tell Polly what to do. She does what she does because she believes it is right. And I am very proud of her for it. By the way I am not a volunteer, I am a SEPB member from Shroyer Park and Mr. Leitzell’s stratgegist and yard sign coordinator. If we had more people stand up and voice their opinions we would have a better Dayton, state of Ohio, and United States. Also, people react negatively to smear campaigning anyway. Is your name really Lynn? What is your name?
Interesting point– Didn’t “tea party” style political stunts played a big part in creating the United States?
Good point, Pizza Bill!! I love the American Revolution! I am a history major and great admirer of great leaders like Washington, Jefferson, Mason, Madison, and Patrick Henry.
While Nan Whaley has been busy churning out Nan-o-vision spots on youtube- with a creepy voiceover, I’ve been putting up candidates nights- for all to see.
There is a difference here.

If we had more people stand up and voice their opinions we would have a better Dayton, state of Ohio, and United States.
That’s half the battle. It is important to get people to care about their government enough to stand up and voice their opinions.
However, there is another half to the battle, which is getting people to be better informed. A lot of people who do stand up and voice their opinions have opinions based on rumors and ignorance. Search for TEA Party on Youtube.com and you can find many people standing up and voicing opinions that won’t lead to better government. Not that all TEA Party participants are ignorant, but many in fact are.
Tea Parties really don’t have anything to do with this race..it is a non-partisan race…of course Nan and Rhine have to get the Ohio Democratic Party to try to bail them out… We Have Had Enough!! of politics as usual. It is time for the voice of the people to be heard not the parties!!!
@Lynn- Issues like the failure of the “team”! This team would be a 4-12 NFL team at best.
McLin should be trying to make the Commissioners and City Manager shine. It is all about making McLin look good. It is not a team! It is all about selfish Rhine McLin, one of the most closed minded people you can run across. Facts are facts! We need a New Dayton for A New Decade!!
wow people!! I was not sent there by anyone!! I actually was on the phone with my neighbor talking about what a disgrace and embarrassment Rhine is to the City of Dayton! I then said, “hey, I’m going to that meeting, I’ll call ya back” I then got into the car and, walah!!! There I was speaking. I was in no means a “plant”…Ha to those who think that!!!! Stay scared people!!! The election is coming up!!! Is that all you have to get her elected????!!!!

I didn’t mean to imply that TEA Parties did have something to do with this race or to imply that any particular individual is ignorant. I just meant what I said, that although getting people to voice opinions is important, and it is, it’s not enough.

I watched the video and Polly’s outcry several times. I empathize with the points she made and support the question she asked. So she was a little emotional and out of line with candidate night protocol – whatever that is. This is what happens when people’s interests are ignored resulting in the issues and blight we see today. She may have been more composed that I would have been.
I will reiterate it with my own emphasis. Why do we have to trash political competitors? Have we really descended so far that the we are willing to denigrate another for political gain? Obviously the answer is yes. It’s symptomatic of a larger problem. Best I can tell, our governmental leaders have sold out to special interest and are willing to do anything to serve the party line. By special interest I include both democrats and republicans. So many times these parties do not represent the will of the people, thus the special interest tag.
@Polly- you are correct- you asked- and I said yes.
I can tell you that Rhine got asked again tonight- and I also got accused of being negative-
