More mudslinging from the State Democratic Party for McLin

The Dayton Daily News was letting people comment on this article, then shut comments off.

Why is the Ohio Democratic Party is putting so much money out to send smear mailings attacking Gary Leitzell? Is it because their polling keeps telling them that Rhine McLin isn’t faring so well- even on the West Side?

If each of these smear mailings costs $10K with just two, they’ve outspent all of what Gary has raised so far:

Candidate for Dayton Mayor Gary Leitzell is calling campaign literature mailed to households citywide by the Ohio Democratic Party part of an ongoing smear campaign.

One slick ad sent to 30,000 Dayton homes this week features a Leitzell-look alike, asleep, with his head resting on a laptop. It does not mention his opponent, Democratic Mayor Rhine McLin. The ad claims Leitzell has “No experience. Bad judgment” and that he is “All wrong for Dayton.”…
Montgomery County Democratic Party Chairman Mark Owens, who approved the ads, said the ads cost about $10,000 per mailing.

He doesn’t consider them negative.

“A negative ad is when you get personal. All we did was quote from local newspapers or his own blog,” Owens said.

via Leitzell slams campaign literature from Ohio Democratic Party [3].

Of course, at least Leitzell has a blog- and contributes to Dayton Most Metro forums on occasion. That’s more than can be said of any of the incumbents.

With eight years to prove herself, it’s sad that Rhine McLin can’t tell us of any glowing success stories- or a clear vision of where she wants to take us. Instead, she uses the excuse of the bad economy, which only would excuse her for the last two-years at best.

Is the reason the Dayton Daily News is not accepting comments on this article because they are featured so prominently in the smear quotes? Or, that after the negative hammering the post about the “step increases” generated- almost universally saying that McLin has to go- the paper decided not to give the anti-McLin side any more room to comment?

The reality is- the Dayton Daily News is as out of touch with the citizens as the incumbent “Team” and no amount of mud is going to obscure the failures of McLin and company come election day.

Clearly, the people running the “nogaryno.com” website are the same ones working on these mailings.

Gary Leitzell

I wish my hair was that thick and that I had a black suit!
We should ask ourselves why the Ohio Democratic Party isn’t focusing on the positive aspects of Ms. McLin vs. the few distorted lines that they could twist out of over 1000 posts on four different blogs or forums over the last 5 years. I believe that there is one more mailing to come. This is a perfect example of wasteful spending. These slicks are being mailed to the same people on the same day. They look so similar, one is being pitched before it is being read. Bad marketing to say the least. It puts my name out to 30,000 people though and informs them that they have a choice. Google searches of my name go up when these mailings go out. Over 50% of Ms. McLins mailings have me mentioned. They haven’t figured out that as an unknown candidate, this helps me.
I have been accessible and participating in the dialogue for years. None of the incumbents can make that statement. At least they criticize me for what I am doing and saying instead of being critical about doing or saying nothing!
Had Enough?
Vote November 3rd.

We just got our bill for DDN today…we dropped every day service 6 months ago & now have Thursday-Sunday, we paid $39.99 for 6 months. They have doubled our service price now to $79.99 for the next 6 months…..anyone else get the same hike?

“We should ask ourselves why the Ohio Democratic Party isn’t focusing on the positive aspects of Ms. McLin”

I said it before, don’t tell me bad stuff about the other person, tell me positive stuff about you (this refers to any candidate). Makes it appear that there’s nothing of substantial value to say. Sure makes people look desperate or worried.

By the way David, how does the ‘quote’ tool work ? I can’t see the code and it wants to quote ALL of the text I type.

Hall

There’s a poll at the DDN story now about these mailings. I haven’t seen the results, but I know what it will indicate…. Gary has a pretty strong “internet” following. :-)

doubled our service price now to $79.99 for the next 6 months

What kind of drugs are they taking?  Sunday-only delivery of the New York Times in 45405 is $195 for 6 months, 2 1/2 times more than the $79 for 6 months of the DDN Thursday-Sunday, but you get way more than 2 1/2 times the value.  Even if you counted only the number of pages in the Sunday NYT vs the number of pages in Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday’s DDN, you’d probably get more, and, of course, the content in the NYT is 1,000 better.  Plus with a home delivery subscription to the NYT, you get free membership to NYT’s premium crosswords AND full access to their online archive.  Does $79 / 6 months get you access to the DDN online archives (the pre-1990 ones that they don’t currently give free public access to)?

Valerie

There’s a freudian slip typo in that online DDN article:
The ad states, “Say no to Republicans’ candidate Gary Elite.”
I got both mailings and the word “elite” does not appear on either of them anywhere.

Allison

The DDN is a total rag. It’s the most poorly written, poorly edited publication I have ever read – with the exception of the equally low-quality Sinclair student newspaper.

Larkin

Our DDN subscription (7 days) is $10.79 on autopay. A few months ago it went up (without notice or permission) to $15.79. I called and raised hell and they dropped the price back to the previous rate. We’re still thinking of canceling it. Many days the paper arrives, sits on the hall table and then gets thrown out, without even being removed from its sleeve. What is there to read?

Valerie

Back to the mailers: these were not one, but  two anti-Leitzell ads that apparently were mailed simultaneously with the same fronts but different backs.  I’m a bit intrigued because both arrived addressed to me personally and I’m the only registered Democrat in the household. 30,000, what is that?  I would really like to know what their designated target market was. Seems like maybe Mark Owens is more than a little worried about the home base.

Hall

Says something when they’re spending this much time, effort, and money to send to registered Democrats…

Gary Leitzell

I would like to personally thank Mr. Owens for putting my name in front of all the Dayton voters this election season not just once but 5 times. It let every voter know that they had a choice on November 3rd. I could not have reached every voter without the wholehearted support of the democratic party. In fact, the democratic party has done more for me than the Republican party ever could!

Ms. McLin has spent $50,000 inadvertently promoting the alternative candidate. Wasteful spending? If she does this with her own money, what do you think she is willing to do with YOUR tax dollars?

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I posted about this at http://www.daytonmayor.blogspot.com

David Lauri

Gary Leitzell hits on my blog are up today too.  You’d think an election were coming up or something.

Gary Staiger

Sounds like a Faux News bite in here with all the clamor about a “smear Campaign”.
According to the Merriam Webster online edition a msear, in the sense of your blog, is defined as:
“3 : a usually unsubstantiated charge or accusation against a person or organization —often used attributively , a smear campaign or a smear joB”

Note the key word: UNSUBSTANTIATED.

Your characterization of the mailings as a smear campaign will only hold true if,  in fact,  Gary Leitzel did not say the quotes directly attributed to him in the mailings.  Unsubstantiated. Thats’ the key here to a “smear” campaign. You might call it it by other names, defend your self  vociferously ,  or,  you might  even try to spin it as having put your name in front of all the people who got the mailing,  and thank  you very much.

But the real bottom line is this:

Without  the quotes being unsubstantiated, as the dictionary definition demands,  you don’t have a “smear”

Sorry, that bird don’t fly.

Gary Staiger

BTW
Mr Leitzel, I would really appreciate it if you could please answer my simple question.
You were quoted in the DDN as stating that  Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were two political figures  that you  particularly admired.  I would like to know, specifically,  what it is that you so admired about the politics of those two individuals, and, concurrently, how  do those principles define your own of view of politics, especially as they  relate to the elected position of mayor of the City of Dayton?

How conservative are you?

The voting public has a right to know the answer.

Wesley Wellbilly

What the dems did was the same thing as this:
I write the following: “I love to kill time in the summer by taking a walk.”
What they purport me as saying is, “I LOVE TO KILL!”
They are taking quotes out of context to create an unsubstantiated image of Gary Leitzell.
Do you stand by that deceitful methodology Gary Staiger?

Gary Leitzell

@ Gary S, I answered your question. You are making a mound out of a mole hill because I didn’t answer it the way YOU wanted me to. Read the very first post on my mayors blog page from last December. I explain very clearly that I am very centralist in my views. If you wish to analyze me then I suggest you read my house blog and every post on Dayton Most Metro as well before you continue to dwell on this. Like Mr. Esrati indicates, I am not what you would expect. I am not your typical political candidate. I solve problems with creative solutions.
Obviously I am not necessarily what people expect but I am the ONLY alternative to what we have. You get to vote again in 4 years. Question is, what do YOU think will be done in 4 years under our current administration. Then, if you had a chance to change that, would you? Your choice. You get one vote.
Regarding the smear stuff. They took my words out of the context in which they were written.  I have made over 1000 posts on several sites and the only things they could come up with to target me with are pitiful to say the least. I am not concerned with my words, I have never been ashamed of anything that I have written. I am concerned with their words.  Those are “Republican Candidate” as well as “No record, no job and no elected experience” all of those are lies. Most people are smart enough to see through the smoke and mirrors.
Vote November 3rd. The future of Dayton depends on it!

Ambrose

Just one more reason to vote for the ‘White Rainbow’ that is Gary Leitz ell.

john

Mr. Chardonay,
you keep whinning about “smear” literature, yet you fail to mention any specifiic item that is untrue. Could it be that the literature is accurate ??

john

He may not be a Republican nominally, but he is in spirit. To state that he admired Ronald Reagan who did more harm to this country by his conservative philosophy makes him a Republican in spirit. Margaret Thatcher was a butcher. She was responsible for the Internment of thousands of Irish Catholics in Northern Ireland. These people were imprisoned without crime or trial. She is also responsible for the death of the 10 hunger strikers, who died protesting her evil policies. Anyone who can admire these two is an idiot and does not deserve public office. As far as the “smear” issue is concerned. Is that all you got? If it is , please stop your whinning.
ps: I did not see Gary at any Obama rallies last year – go ask him who he voted for.

Gary Staiger

Since I’ve not received a straight answer from Mr Leitzel about why he admires Ms Thatcher and President Reagan’s political positions let me rephrase.

Do you accept that there is sound  scientific evidence that global warming is real?

Do you believe that President Obama is a natural born citizen and therefor legally seated in his office?

Do you believe in the the theory of life’s origin known as intelligent design and do you feel it should be taught alongside Darwinian theory in public schools?

What is your Political position regarding Trade Unions? Do you support CARD CHECK  [legislation currently under considerations in US Congress]  for union certification in a workplace.

Are you opposed to the establishment of a public option without a “triggger” in the national health legislation. If you are, please explain why.

Do you believe that a marriage is solely between a man and a woman?

Oh, and because it is quite lkiely that some citizen or citizens group  might propose that the City Commission pass  a resolution calling for US withdrawal from Afghanistan, as  past Commissions have done on Vietnam War and other contentious issues, what is YOUR vierw of that conflict

What ideas do you have for controlling/regulating the large number of prostitutes on Dayton streets.

David has been very critical of economic policies of the current Dayton City Commissioners as regards money that has been  spent  in the form of grants, bonds and other incentives to subsidize local businesses. His argument is that  not a prudent use of city funds. What is your position on this?

Have a nice day…
Gary Staiger
