McLin goes negative with smear mail

You didn’t think that war chest would stay closed did you? Wait for the TV spots to start. The Dems have been quietly video taping candidates nights- to build a smear library.

Rhine McLin sends out a “Compare: your choice is important and it’s clear” email- saying Gary is a “The Republicans’ candidate” and that “Having to do the job is the  “Worse Thing””

McLin smear mailing [1] PDF

The polling must have come back pretty bad for Rhine that she’s attacking Gary Leitzell as a Republican.

So much for playing nice. As to Rhine’s claim at “working hard”- that she “balanced 8 city budgets with no tax increase” is semantics- since she increased fees on everything else. That we also have one of the highest income taxes in the State is also overlooked.

If our “great people and inventive attitude will build the Dayton of the future”- how come we don’t have more people running? Is it that your political machine makes people feel intimidated from the ballot?

It’s sad that this is the best she can do with her “experience.”

She’s also endorsed by “Senator Brown, Governor Strickland, the AFL-CIO and the Democratic Party.” I bet she can’t wait for the Dayton Daily News endorsement to add them to the list.

This is the third jumbo postcard I’ve gotten so far. How many more will come?

Really, judging from her performance last night in the err..debate?, she has to go negative and start her smear campaign in earnest. What else does she have? Most of what she said last night were redundant reiterations of what the Commission and others have been doing over the years. We can look and see the fruit produced from those efforts. (or in this case – not produced) Also, the biggest thing she lacked in her “answers” was any type of clear vision for Dayton. Just more of the same.
As for Gary Leitzell. I’m willing to give him a chance. I can’t say that I agree with him on everything but having spent some time talking to him on several occasions I believe in his ideas and think that many of them just might help turn Dayton around.

Oy gevalt @ Mr. Leitzell’s having said that “the worst thing that could happen to me personally is that I get elected because then I would have to do the job.”

I will say that unlike with his statement that “I do have a problem with changing the legal definition of a traditional word like marriage to line the pockets of lawyers though. It would mean that we could legally change the meaning of any word to suit our purpose. That could lead us on a very dangerous course,” I think I get what he means in his “worst thing” statement.  I think what he means is that it’d be better for him and his family if he didn’t have to devote time to being mayor.  McLin really is being disingenuous trying to put forth the conclusion that what he meant was that he wouldn’t work hard.

Both statements do show that Leitzell needs to think a bit before he speaks (or types).  It’s fine not to have memorized a canned message and to try to give honest answers, but politicians, like it or not, do have to consider the implications of their statements.  Part of being a politician is not just showing one is capable of doing the job but also being able to get elected.

What has amazed me about Leitzell’s “traditional word like marriage” statement is his utter refusal, given the very obvious departure from tradition that his own marriage has taken, to clarify what he meant.  If he also refuses to clarify what he meant about how being elected mayor would be the “worst thing” for him, people have to draw their own conclusions about what he meant, and as McLin’s campaign is obviously hoping, those conclusions may not be favorable.

What about your own smear site, David, http://www.esrati.com?  You print the nastiest, most negative things without any evidence to back up your claims.  You accuse people of corruption with no proof.  You call people names.
Why can’t McLin do the same thing?  At least it’s factual- Gary really did say that.  Are the rules different for you?  You can do it, but no one else can?   You can accuse of people of crimes and corruption without proof, but you scream bloody murder if they do it to you.  Maybe you can dish it out, but just can’t take it.

Civil Servants are People, too

Lynn, the key word here is “context” and that is the difference between a smear and a critique.

Not that it hasn’t happened here from time to time… but still, it’s not the same.

I watched the “debate” (I was sick and couldn’t attend as I had hoped I could), and while Gary seemed a little nervous, I liked the fact that most of the answers that he gave tried to actually answer the question at hand.  McLin with her “Tech Town” this and “Tech Town” that speech over and over solidified my vote.  Gary may not be as polished as she is in front of a camera, but he doesn’t make my stomach turn with knowing another term from the existing mayor means an even quicker death for my city than the past eight years have been.  And her relationship with the President?  Really, Rhine?  Color me impressed (not).

Hall

Sounds like she’s defending it now…. There’s a difference between something said directly and something taken out of context too, but that likely doesn’t matter (to them).
I’ve posted about this negative campaigning (to Gary) previously and emphasis not to stoop to that. I would, if I were him, point out the fact that they’re doing it and say with a smile “I won’t do that” as I think it could work in his favor.

Jeff Wellbaum

Do you have numbers or examples to proove that Daytonian don’t respond well to negative campaigning?

Jeff Wellbaum

sorry meant to say Daytonians

David Lauri

That Bohardt lost and that he also used negative campaign ads is not proof that the negative campaign ads caused his loss.  Bohardt lost and Earth’s air contains 20.95% oxygen, but you can’t say that that proves that the presence of oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere caused his loss.

Hall

Personally, I won’t vote for someone who does negative campaigning (or advertising). Tell me what you can/will do, not what the other person does wrong. If you can’t, do you not have anything good to say about yourself ? Might seem that way… Again, call them out on it time after time.
Can’t wait for the video.

David Lauri

@David E: you may well be right that Bohardt’s negative campaigning cost him the election, but merely saying that he ran negative ads and then lost doesn’t prove the negative ads were why he lost.

Jeff Wellbaum

@ David Lauri and Esrati. Yes, that does not prove for a 100% fact that caused Bohardt to lose but was possibly a significant factor.

I loved seeing her face last night while I was explaining the disgust I feel on her negative campaigning, while Nan Whaley sat snickering and texting .  And while Gary Leitzell was talking, and all the other candidates, Nan Whaley and Rhine McClin sat and whispered and laughed like school children!!!!  That is running our city????  Ha hahahah…No wonder Dayton is the way it is!!!  They need to go get some professional guidance on how to act while others are speaking!!!  I just can’t believe it!!  I’ve never been to a priority board meeting, nor a meet the candidates forum.  But this, I needed to go and voice my concerns!!!!  If we don’t get some new blood in the Dayton leadership and commission, I’m outta here!!!!  Let them kill our city…I don’t want to be a part of their stupidity anymore!!  I’ve given them a chance, now it’s time to let someone else have a chance!!!

Most folks credit Curran’s last minute negative attack ads on Foley for giving a real boost to the Commissioner. Curran should have never attached Foley’s ability to keep a checkbook in college and made Curran look desperate. I am sure the voters will see the same desperation from the Mayors playbook this time.  Having known the mayor and Charles Curran for sometime, it is obvious that neither the Mayor nor the former Commissioner did this on their own. This happens when pollsters and political advisors decide on literature. It was out of character for Chuck Curran and its out of Character for our Mayor.  She loses two or three points because of this, that makes this race competitive if you use the polling numbers she is looking at.

You think this piece was negative???  Facts are facts.  People who say stupid things should expect them to come back and bite them in the ass.  You should know this better than anyone David.
How’s your finance report coming by the way?

Jeff Wellbaum

Oh, I guess that goes for you too when you say stupid things. DDN endorsing McLin is a joke. There is a HUGE October surprise coming this week… get ready… and several more…

Jeff

^
Has the DDN endoresed yet?  It would be refreshing if they endorsed “none of the above”.

Jeff

That was a fairly even-handed endorsment, though their comment about Leitzell having a business painting minatures is sort of petty.  So what if he does? Personally I think it’s kind of cool.

The comments are a hoot, as always.   More righties fuming at the DDN. Same as it ever was.  I guess the paper was never the same for them since Dennis Shere (sp?) was fired and Bill Wild left.

Drexel Dave Sparks

Yeah, what is up with him being belittled for being an independent business entreprenuer?
Has anyone seen the job Gary has done on his old crack house?
