Late night food in Dayton: Pie Pizzeria on Brown Street

When I was just out of high school I worked the 2nd and 3rd shift at the parking garage in Downtown Cleveland for National City Bank. It was a great job for a college freshman because you could study pretty much uninterrupted and get paid. The only problem was food- and for that, there was Cleveland Steak and Potato, the all night eatery that was run by some Greek guys and had awesome, messy gyros. I was a 3am regular. As were cops, newspaper people, and a lot of people leaving bars.

Dayton has always been missing an all night greasy spoon. Sure, there are some chain fast food joints open late- but, no place to get a slice of pizza. That’s changed as of Halloween- when Pie Pizzeria opened up on Brown Street between BW3’s and the Pine Club.

Open from 11am to 3am M-W and 11am to 4am Thursday through Sunday- you can now satisfy your late night munchies.

The pizzas are hand tossed- and “NY Style” with a thin crust and NYC themed names. I’ll be trying them out soon enough- but not tonight.

They feature free delivery and have sandwiches, pasta dishes, a “Big Don Dog” which is a “stuffed” Nathan’s Famous Hot dog served “The New York Way.” Salads and Calzones and Stromboli finish out the menu.

Pie Pizzeria is at 1910 Brown Street Dayton Ohio 45409 and their phone is 937-228-4pie

They’ve got a horrible site at www.piepizzeria.com [3]but, at least they have one.

Prices run to the inexpensive side- with slices from $2.50 for a cheese to $4 for the “brawler.” They have a challenge that if two people can eat a large brawler in 20 minutes it’s free- and you get your picture on the wall. So far, only one picture is up. At a pound a slice that’s 4lbs of pizza in 20. Go knock yourself out- tell them esrati sent you.

I wonder how much they paid for their website.

Being a former New Yorker, I’m a bit of a New York style pizza snob. Their pizza is true New York style. They even serve an 18″ pie which in my experience has been difficult to find outside of New York. I don’t compare their pizza to Pizza Factory, that would be apples to oranges. However, compared to Flying Pizza – they got em beat by miles. The slices are just the right size to fold em in half like you are supposed to be able to do for any true New York style pizza. They are my new favorite for New York style pizza. Now they need a refrigerator full of Snapple and some seats and they would be a true Pizzeria….lol
Last night we had a 18″ pie with pepporoni delivered for $10.00 (free delivery – $2 dollar tip for driver) You really can’t go wrong here. I have 2 slices left for today’ lunch.

I’m encouraged to see a late night pizza place that isn’t Cousin Vinny’s finally. But please, could you please please please NOT provide the menu in PDF format? Just type it out onto the menu page, in HTML, so that my slow computer doesn’t have to wait 5 minutes for the crappy PDF reader to load, as well as the file. There’s really no reason to use PDF, whatsoever, for this situation.
Cheers, and good luck with the business!

I’ll have to try their stuffed pie next, The Brooklyn Brawler. Just looked at the picture – looks really good. Of course when you get into stuffed pie’s it’s Chicago-esque. Nice to see a little variety on the menu.

Lol.  I was going to mention that Cousin Vinny’s is open till 4am and I think their pizza is great.  But I’m finding one thing out.  Pizza tastes vary a lot between people.  I personally can’t stand Marion’s but everyone I work with loves them.  CV’s doesn’t skimp on toppings and are a great price.

D. Greene

Don’t get me wrong, Vinny’s is good, but it can be too greasy, and after it being the only truly late night pizza option, you get tired of it.

David Lauri

Patrick, are you a native Daytonian?

Don’t go looking for pizza at Tony’s Italian Sausage on Wayne anymore… Anyone ever have their pizza anyway ? They finally closed that shop. Their carnival/festival business must have been really good ’cause that shop was closed more often than it was open. It’s a shame too, it was nice (at least the few times we were able to catch them).

$10 for an 18″ pizza delivered!!!  Paid twice that at another Wayne ave bar/pizzeria just the other nite!

Will Brooks

@David. They delivered to me last night for $10 with coupon. Delivery was free and the $10 special seems to be ongoing and for pickup or delivery.

I tried a phone ordering Friday night.  Phone was busy for 5 minutes.  So I drove up and went in.  They are a little understaffed, surely a problem with employees at a start up.  Only one person at the register and one making pies.   The cashier was complaining that the late night crowd has been a little out of control.  Saw no mention of $10 deals in store, but got a 2 slices and a pop for $6.
The pizza was great.  Definitely reminds me of every non-chain pizza place that we had growing up in Western NY.  I hope they get things in order, cause I’d love to avoid the one way street parking nightmare over there by BW3 and Milanos.  Very good pizza!

Will Brooks

@Mike   – the deal is on a coupon on the menu at the cash register. Unless it’s changed.

Patrick

@Dave –  No, I bought a house in Dayton in March 07 as I worked down here and lived in Sidney.  Tanks is one of my favorite places to eat, but we were talking pizza.  I was in the pizza biz for about two years and my wife, about 10.  We don’t order anything but CV’s since discovering them down here.  We mostly get from the Wayne store because I live in that area, but we will do “Beat The Clock” Tuesday at Patterson occassionally.  That’s how we discovered them.  Two topping pizza’s for the price of your call in time starting at 5pm.

David Lauri

Well that explains it, Patrick.  I think one has to be a native Daytonian to truly appreciate the greatness of Marion’s pizza.

Patrick

Marketing BS.  Food is either good or it’s not.  I’m not even sure what to say to that comment.  Are Dayton taste buds more elite than other regions?  Reminds me of when I was in St. Paul.  We bought pizza that was the supposed winner of many awards.  Turns out they put their toppings on the pizza and then bath it in a red sauce.  You can’t take a slice out with out the sauce running out of everything.  It wasn’t easy to eat nor was it really any good with two inches of sauce on everything, but the locals seem to love it.  I think what you mean to say here is that Daytonians have been brainwashed into what makes up good food.
