It’s not that Trump won, it’s that the establishment lost

There are folks in both “parties” that aren’t happy right now, but, they have no one to blame but themselves. While an increasing number of voters refuse to declare allegiance to either political faction, the establishment ignored this growing body of “undeclared” or “undecided” who they worked to cut out of the primary process- so that by election day, people were being forced to choose between candidates they didn’t really want.

What they want is a government for the people, by the people. And while Citizens United did an insane amount of damage to our electoral process, it was aided and abetted by those in the back rooms who thought they knew what’s better for America. That they should pick the winners. Ask Sherrod Brown who actually wanted Bernie Moreno (and spent $2.7M pushing for Moreno to win the primary [1])as his opponent how he feels now?

The strangeness of the entitled rich kid becoming the choice of the un-entitled masses is beyond comprehension- but, his outlandish claims of destroying what he calls the “dark state” resonated deeply with the same people he’s going to shaft. They want to believe he’ll be the undoing of the government- but don’t realize that it comes with the destruction of hard won protections from everything from predatory lending to environmental and product protections to food and drug safety, never mind civil rights be damned, and freedom from political retribution.

The absurdity that our primary system isn’t democratic at all. By the time Ohio voted in 2020- I couldn’t vote for anyone but Biden. Harris never won a primary- or a vote of the people- she was picked by Biden in 2020. Maybe, if we had a single day ranked choice primary nationwide, and the runner up became the VP pick, we’d be in better shape. The only people who pick a VP to become president in most American’s minds are god- through death in office, an assassin causing death in office, or if they win a primary as a candidate after serving- not by a back room deal of party insiders (unless your name is Gerald Ford).

There isn’t an American alive who enjoys this process, the endless mudslinging, the ads full of lies, the ads period. After 4 years of hearing how the 2020 election was fixed and stolen with Trump was robbed, we now, somehow got it gloriously right? Hard to believe. The only thing that changed in this election is that we spent more to get less in every sense of the word.

If politicians were forced to be held accountable for their advertising like my clients are (I run an ad agency) this whole process would be a lot different, but, that’s only part of the problem. Soundbites and slogans aren’t substance, and none of it matters if the billionaires can buy their politicians and policies and the people can’t.

So much noise about ballot harvesting, illegal voting, voter ID requirements, yet we still allow politicians to self report their donations, and don’t require registration of donors. If there’s one thing we need more than anything now- it’s registered donors with real time reporting, and being able to tie voting records of our elected leaders to their backers. I set up a non-profit, The Modern Policy Institute [2], to push these ideas and develop software solutions to bring transparency to government. I also openly challenged the Federal Election Commission to revamp their systems and stop allowing ActBlue and WinRed to show up as donors [3]. But, who the hell am I.

The only solution many American’s had for some of our frustration with our government was term limits. As an idealist, I always believed elections would serve as term limits to sort out the good from the bad, but, I’ve been proven so very wrong this time. The (S)election process is wonkered up.

America is fed up with the disconnect between the political class and the people. Donald Trump wasn’t the answer, won’t solve the problem, nor is he competent to fix anything, but, he definitely isn’t considered the political establishment.

There still may be some obstacles for his ascendancy- like if he is truly above the law and can get out of his felony convictions. Or if all of a sudden, the Supreme Court somehow realizes the mess they got us into, and questions the legality of Musk’s voter lottery, or who knows what else. All would be temporary, and bad, because, it’s pretty clear, given the choice between Harris and Trump- the people spoke, and we have no mechanism for do-overs.

Will America split over this? Will the coasts secede? I doubt it. Would getting rid of the Electoral College solve this? Nope, although it could make candidates campaign nationally instead of just pandering in a few “battleground” states. We need more fundamental fixes like giving DC and the territories; American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands representation. We need to consider rejiggering the Senate- stopping any state that has only 1 representative- from having 2 senators (Make N and S Dakota whole again).

While one of the beauties of this country is our diversity and the differences between our communities, our music, our food, our accents, it’s sad that the only time I’ve truly seen our country come together in my lifetime was because of an act of terrorism- 9/11. If we truly want to make America great, the first thing we need to realize is the only way we’re great is when we come together- not apart.

I believe it’s time to stop old farts from running the country too- 70 should be the end of the line for every politician and judge nationwide. And, end lifetime judicial appointments at all levels- including our local judges who are never opposed.

In fact, if you run un-opposed, that should automatically be your last term. If the seat doesn’t get two candidates, maybe it’s not needed. In my local county- we have over 30 political jurisdictions- and we’re over politicianized (yeah, I just made that word up, sue me). I don’t trust Elon Musk to make government more efficient, but, yes, it’s needed. Badly. The only solution I see is to start electing folks to sue the government for us- to protect us from bad RFP’s, bad policies, bad enforcement of laws already on the books. An ombudsman for the people.

When the FBI arrested only Black people in Dayton Ohio and told us that these folks were the first round of their round up in “The Culture of Corruption” investigation on April 3, 2019, I thought, finally! Well, it’s 2024 and they’ve yet to let the other shoe drop on the white folks- and instead hide behind GloMar responses [4] of releasing their work product that would prove or disprove the conduct of our locally elected officials. If we can’t trust the government, why have it at all?

While there are folks on both sides of this election having extreme emotional reactions today, I’m refusing to let this bother me (I credit my Army training). I believe the American people sent a message and it was clear- they want change, the end of politics as usual. And like every other American, I don’t think the folks we’ve elected through this insane process have a clear vision or a plan to do what’s best for our country and the world. But, when push comes to shove, America has generally risen to the occasion, and I’m hoping for the best.

Hahahahahaha! Now it’s time to purge the traitors! What a great election from the ground up.

Poor Melissa…I bet the trowelled on mascara is running today!

Billy

Diversity is a failure. We aren’t “better” for diversity. We’re better when ignorant vermin are kept out of our country and out of taxpayers’ pockets. And that’s on the way!

The majority vote, the electoral college, the senate and the house can now right the ship. Biden said we were garbage. We need to thank him for that. He was Trump’s best campaigner.

Now we need to clean out the real garbage. And we will!

Mike Bock

David — I appreciate your many efforts to be a positive influence. I think you are being way too kind when you write, “I believe the American people sent a message and it was clear- they want change, the end of politics as usual.” I want change and so do you, but in this election citizens were voting for a change that produces a strong-man authoritarian government. It is shocking and sad that a big section of the American people seem to be sending the message that they have given up on democracy. They simply want what they want — to be winners in the system. They want to own the Libs, etc. There is only a short time to save our republican system. Our goal should be to transform our system of politics in this congressional district. What is needed is a vision and a plan that will inspire, motivate, and mobilize the majority of citizens who are still sane.

Melissa

Rent free, Billy. I’m touched!

I dedicate this to you as a soothing balm for what is afflicting your troubled mind. Try to practice self care.

Joe Schmoe

Nate Silver was right; you were wrong David. Another reason why no one trusts the Liberal Media. “Kamala is up by 3 points in Iowa!” What a bunch of liars. Too bad, Melissa, hope you practice self care on your little, troubled mind. Much love!!!

Donald Phillips

Where’s Gary “one-term mayor of Dayton” Lietzel when we need him? And what about Teresa Grasper!

Tim hart

Did Kamala write this ?

Melissa

Origin of Joe-schmoe

  • Derivative of Joe (as in average Joe). Adding a schm- or shm- to the beginning of a word is meant to diminish, negate, or dismiss an argument (for instance, “rain, schmain, we’ve got a game to play”). This process was adapted in English from the use of the “shm” prefix in Yiddish to dismiss something; as in, “fancy, schmancy.” While “Schmoe” (alternate spellings) are thought by some linguists to be a clipping of Yiddish schmuck (“penis”) but not universally accepted.
  • From Wiktionary

I always thought Joe Schmoe was a cartoonish character like Kilroy, Andy Capp, or Gomer Pyle USMC. Good thing you didn’t pull out your Yiddish, Joe LOL. I’m glad you still love me.

We shouldn’t worry because the President Elect says he will fix everything, stop all wars, close the border, build the wall, have Mexico pay for it, put a chicken in every pot (oops, sorry, wrong President), remove Social Security, dismantle affordable healthcare, sacrifice Ukraine to Putin, make Bibi play nice, turn over his taxes, fire all of those lazy Fed government workers he knows, stack SCOTUS with his best buds (oops, he already did that), control the genitals of all of the women in America, and grab ’em by the pussy (oops, sorry again, that’s done). And, the best part is he’s calling for unity to heal the nation and the world. Maybe he could ask Mr. Musk to heal outer space while he is out there. Aren’t you relieved? I mean, the President Elect IS a man of his word, right?

Here’s something to get started on post election chillaxing – for real:

And just why should the Dakota’s be combined? Would we be better served if Senators were chosen by the Congress critters of the state, as the founders imagined?
The Constitution mandated each state would have 2 Senators, regardless of the size or population. I don’t see the gloom and doom of Moreno being elected, but, you have your own party to blame. When one party jumps to the opposition to put what they think is a weaker candidate, to make it easier for their own bad candidate, I always hold out hope that the “plant” gets elected. It’s called karna.
And, I do think we had Harris force fed to us. I took the chance of watching CBS”s Election Night coverage. I guess I missed out on the meltdowns of the MSNBC crowd, which I regret. But, I watched Norah and the gang change from overconfidence that the evening would end as they wanted, to whining that Harris “only had 107 days” to mount a winning effort. I thought she lost because she was a poor choice. In my opinion, Biden would probably have done better, even with voters who knew he’s not up to the job.

Snookie

Dave, you do some decent journalism. Trump won because of democrats like you. So upset the FBI didn’t arrest some white people? The black people they busted got busted because they were stupid and greedy. Spreading hate of your own people makes you a white uncle tom. Keep up the good work. MAGA

Herbert Morris

I was correct in my comments to David’s post on who to vote for. Trump won Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and all swing states and the popular vote. David, you need to do a post on how the Democrats have gone way left of center. The Democrats need to be close to where Bill Clinton was on policies. Democrats need to be anti Iran, anti terrorist and pro Israel. Democrats need to be less illegal immigrant and want to close the border, not giving entitlement to illegals over citizens. Less about men in women’s sports and tampons in boys bathrooms. If the Democrats go back to center left they might win future elections. The scope of the Trump win is historic with Trump winning democrat coalitions of Latinos, Jews, African-American men and even Arab Americans. Dems need to do some soul searching. Oh and downvoting me for telling the truth in my last post doesn’t change why the Democrats lost. Was everything I said in that post not true? Kamala – I’m unburdened by what has been.. What??? World Salad!

Jimmy

Dave,
I occasionally drop in and view your posts. Most are well-written, and it’s understood by most they lean left if not more libertarian. Your thesis of injustice to the American people by right-leaning politicians with power and influence on the national level sometimes leaves a blind spot in your potential evaluation of local issues (not all issues). My opinion on your recent eulogy of the Democratic party fails to memorialize both parties for exalting educated derelicts to lead each party and you fail to give the proper respects to these politicians as crooks, criminals, and pathological liars. Again, your time spent emulating Ralph Nader and writing to expose Local, State, and National injustice in politics may be better spent pushing the pills of accountability of documented real injustices. In the neighboring Clark County, the county leads all 88 Ohio counties (per capita) in requests for protection orders (by women) they are all affiliated with domestic violence. Springfield Ohio leads all 368 cities/towns in Ohio (per capita) in Rape, of women 19 and under and is ranked 4th in the State in rape (per capita) of women. Domestic/intimate partner violence against women has increased in severity and lethality in Clark County since 2017 and municipal court prosecutions have decreased since 2017. In 2023 Municipal Prosecutor DeBartolo (yes, he is related) and Assistant Prosecutor DeWine (again related) are atrocious, 91% of all domestic violence assault cases were dismissed. For violent crimes against women (as per UCR) the plea agreements for offenders went from 68% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2023 and it is set to go lower. There are so many injustices in Montgomery and Clark County that need a voice for real victims, and one strong voice can make a change. Women are not raped, abused or beaten because the offenders prefer Republican over Democrat. As a 21-year Army and Airforce veteran mustang enjoy November 11th you earned it.

Melissa

BOTH political parties have failed us.
DAY ONE of Trump 2.0:
The President-elect will deport all aliens inside America, but he must ask Congress to DECLARE WAR first under this legal gem called The Alien Enemies Act of 1798:
“Whenever there shall be a declared war between the United States and any foreign nation or government … and the President of the United States shall make public proclamation of the event, all natives, citizens, denizens, or subjects of the hostile nation or government, being males of the age of fourteen years and upwards, who shall be within the United States, and not actually naturalized, shall be liable to be apprehended, restrained, secured and removed, as alien enemies.”
(women were added in 1918)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Igi7qfhmN9I

Presidents already have the authority to arrest, detain and remove alien enemies.
It’s expensive. Senate Republicans blocked the bipartisan border security bill after pressure from Donald Trump (and Mitch McConnell) so Trump could campaign on “fixing” the border problem. It’s DOA. Everything Trump Touches Dies. I hope no humans die during Trump’s performance art.

Tim hart

Melissa, the Democrat bill was a fucking joke. It allowed over 3000 illegals to cross per day. Get that shit out of here.

Melissa

Tim, you’re misinformed. It was a bipartisan border bill – Republicans and Democrats. Trump chose to kill it so he could campaign on it. That’s a fact. Please take a moment to inform yourself.

You might want to prepare yourself to be shanked by Trump, too.

Joe Schmoe

Hi Melissa, here’s the million-dollar question: Why did Biden and Harris wait THREE YEARS to start talking about a Border Bill?!?

Melissa

They didn’t, Joe Schmoe. The Biden administration addressed the border on Day One, never stopped working on it, and continues to do so to this day.

On his first day in office in January 2021, Biden proposed the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021 which would have made the pathway to citizenship easier for those already in the United States, provide funding to reduce asylum backlogs, and strengthen the border and ports of entry through modern technology. On January 23, 2021, Biden introduced the immigration bill to Congress. It did not pass.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/01/20/fact-sheet-president-biden-sends-immigration-bill-to-congress-as-part-of-his-commitment-to-modernize-our-immigration-system/

The Biden administration continued pressing for reforms. Immigration policy as a whole is complicated.
https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2022/01/11/key-facts-about-u-s-immigration-policies-and-bidens-proposed-changes/

In February 2024 and again in May 2024, Republicans in the Senate blocked a bipartisan border security bill Biden had pushed for to reduce the number of migrants who can claim asylum at the border and provide more money for Customs and Border Protection officials, asylum officers, immigration judges and scanning technology at the border. It also provided for thousands of work visas for migrant spouses of U.S. citizens awaiting immigrant visas, and 250,000 new visas over five years for people seeking to work in the U.S. or join family members.
https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/06/04/fact-sheet-president-biden-announces-new-actions-to-secure-the-border/

The 2024 border bill was negotiated in a bipartisan manner. Initially, it looked like it had the votes to pass. Then, Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump killed it because he felt the bipartisan border bill would boost Biden’s reelection chances.

Trump stuck a political shiv in the chest of Senators Lankford (R-OK) and Murphy (D-CT) who had worked on the bill in good faith. Senate Leader McConnell (R-KY) back stabbed Lankford for political expediency. Trump put a shiv in McConnell’s back, deservedly so. That’s how the Republicans roll.
