DPS to hire an expensive PIO

When we bid to do all their marketing communications, it was to take over the responsibilities of the PIO and also produce the work.

Instead, the board hired, without reading the contract, the Ohlmann Group- and spent stupid money on a bad campaign.

Now- they are going to hire someone to try to direct the Ohlmann Group.

This from a district that was crying broke last year. Note- Jill Moberly didn’t make this much.

JOB TITLE:                     Executive Director of Communications

 REPORTS TO:                  Superintendent of Schools

 SALARY SCHEDULE:        $94,500.00-$113,400.00

SUMMARY

The Chief Communications Officer provides leadership, direction and strategic planning for news and information as well as marketing and advertising of DPS schools, initiatives and progress.  The ideal candidate is committed to a brand journalism strategy, with experience developing and implementing internal and external communications strategies and managing the day-to-day operations of a busy Communications Department. If there is one thing Rhonda Corr has been good at, it’s hiring expensive people at the top of the food chain.

Something smells rotten here. You contract for services, and don’t have ‘performance measurements’. Then you hire a person to basically monitor that contract.

Dayton BoE looks like they are the welfare system for their educational buddies. What this organization needs is an outside, independent organization, with NO ties to current staff, and board to come up with a managment and change plan, that is implemented NOW.

They need a STRONG board with an education background and STRONG business skills. BoE needs to be run like a BUSINESS, so that the schools can function as places of learning, with great metrics and plans. They need to keep the business side out of the education side, so that teachers can teach,

What I see now is one big cesspool of people, feelings and emotions, with the teachers and students getting screwed.

We need to have people in the admin and board who are strong supporters of what works in education, not using our teachers and staff as an experiment for some ‘educational theory’.

Something has to change, and soon….

It would make much more sense for DPS/CF to spend whatever funds are available on the things that are critical to good education. These include teaching kids to read and write, mathematics, geography and social science, art and music, science and physics, health and fitness, and a few other subjects. Using technology as needed is a great way to teach more efficiently, and kids should get some tech training, too. For DPS/CF issues like truancy, violence, drug usage, nutrition and medical care are also logical priorities.

Hiring a PR firm or an Executive Director of Communications should be well down the list
of priorities. Until the basic educational needs of the students are met, all spending not specifically for those basic needs should be eliminated.

Focus on giving kids what they need to live healthy and productive lives, and eliminate all other spending.

BTW, the acronym DPS/CF = DAYTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS/CLUSTER F¥€K.

It seems like appropriate branding to me. Dave E – can you work up a logo based on this acronym?
