Greg Hunter is a big fan of the ponies, and thinks that parimutuel [1] gambling is a much better bet than any casino. He’s also convinced that the economic benefit of horse racing exceeds that of casinos- it’s a big boost to agriculture in his opinion.
He cites an article in the New York Times about the use of stem cells to heal an aging race horse [2] as an indication of the spin-off benefits.
I’m not anti-gambling, but I do consider it a tax on stupid people. Anyone who wants to play cards with me, I’ll be happy to let you win 65% of your wager anytime.

Horse racing + biotech in Dayton? At least biotech would result in something that might be marketable to the wider world. Gambling is a wealth consuming part of the economy no matter how many ‘little people’ it helps.
I guess nobody cares about horse racing. I actually thought it was a good idea to pair the animal husbandry that supports the racing with some biotech development work, racing down at the fairground and R&D at UD.
Of course, to go the ‘government knows best’ route, you need to get the governor to designate Dayton a ‘Hub of Horse Husbandry Excellence’ (I kid, I kid).
No one cares because the sport was demonized and lumped as all other gambling when it has so many facets, genetics, man and beast, bankroll management, agriculture and labor diversification. The DDN lumps it as gambling, when really it is more nuanced, but Americans do not take the time. Much like the “drug war”, is there really no difference between pot and methamphetamine ?
