In case you haven’t noticed, I haven’t posted nearly as frequently in the last 2 weeks. Nor have Greg and I been videotaping the Dayton Grassroots Daily Show.
The break-in at my office [1] took a toll on my work flow- and I’ve been playing catch-up since. A lot of time has been wasted restoring computers (even though everything was recovered- nothing that was taken was still usable after the idiots stole it, haste makes waste) and getting quotes on the door and talking to the insurance company.
I’ve also been thinking a lot about what brought 3 delinquents together to go on their ill-fated, middle of the night crime spree. Obviously, they weren’t even smart enough to steal what was valuable on the market- most of what they took are cell phones- easily traceable, with no value unless they are connected to a network (which can ID them). What they stole and what they passed up in my office showed that they flunked computer theft 101- taking 2 monitors that weren’t nearly as valuable as the computers they were connected to.
Two of the three are still in jail. The one who is not showing on the list is the one who had the longest record (either he’s already been sent upstate- or he’s out on bond). I can’t find out anything because the detective who has the case doesn’t have working voice mail. I was never contacted about the court hearings btw. I would have gone.
In the review of this whole thing- I’m saddened to have to say that Dayton hasn’t even been able to produce good crooks.
The system won’t do anything to reform these 3 losers- all it will do is add to their problems.
Will these three ever contribute anything to society? Unlikely. More than likely they’ll all have at least one kid that’s almost doomed to follow through life in their footsteps. One of the three had told the cops he was along to make money because he has a kid on the way- how refreshing.
The U.S. now has more people in prison than any other industrialized nation. These idiots will continue to cost us all for years to come as we pay for their room and board and get nothing in return.
In the meantime- I’m facing higher insurance premiums, and my property value has been perceptually lowered. No longer am I able to say that my neighborhood is safe- thanks to the last year.
Is it time to abandon ship? Some would say yes.
I think it’s time to look at our entire society- what values do we promote and reward? Until we bring honor back to being a citizen in the real sense of the word, we’re going to keep getting screwed.
It’s not just the petty hoods either- it’s the people like Tom Petters [2], Bernie Madoff and the wizards of Wall Street and Washington who’ve looked out for the wrong people for too long.
If you really want to judge the success of a country/society/economic system- I think you have to look at how it treats its lowest of the low- not the best of the best. As I look back at this whole ordeal- I’m starting to think our country has failed us more than we realize.

“Safe” neighborhood ? I’m not sure if break-ins disqualify a neighborhood. Assaults and worse, yes.

Are you indicating that you think that having your home and place of work invaded, your property stolen and destroyed, doesn’t mean that your neighborhood is unsafe? You think that an individual must be personally physically harmed?
David, you are correct. Your neighborhood is unsafe. The people who make it unsafe are the same people who receive the vast majority of government “assistance” and provide the least contribution to society. Can’t we all agree that we should stop enabling them? Wouldn’t you rather have me as a neighbor than them?
Not all of Dayton is unsafe. Just the majority of Dayton. I agree with The Body, break-ins make it unsafe. What if DE was there at the time of the break-in? A beat down would of/could of happened.
There would probably be 3 dead or broken theives!
Please… 3 on 1…. come on now. I know he was a bad ass in the Army, but 3 or 1, especially when the 3 had weapons of some sort. The 3 may not have been Green Peppers in our military, but I am guessing they could hold their own.

And the other thing, I just can’t get myself to believe you do not have CCTV, you being a High Tech, or professing to be one. Close the gate after you lose the horsey. Shamey…shame.
My car was broken into once and vandalized a second time as it sat parked in front of my old Washington Township apartment – over $800 total damage in the early 1990s.
After buying a house in Springboro, no breakins, but several incidents of petty vandalism over 7 years. Called the police after a couple of the incidents – they even brought in the fire department to clean up after one of the incidents. Based on one of the incidents, and the increasingly frequent harrassing phone calls my last couple years there, apparently someone on the street concluded that I was gay and didn’t want a gay guy in the neighborhood.
I’m pretty sure that overall, Springboro and Washington Township have lower crime rates than Dayton does. But Dave’s incident doesn’t make his neighborhood sound any worse than my old neighborhoods were.
Anecdotally, you are correct, but I would contend that a great number of the good ole USA is on the Dole, especially in Dayton. GM, Social Security, Road Construction, Banks, Caresource, WPAFB, City, County and Federal workers are on the DOLE. If the Dole is taxpayer dollars used for operations.
Now I would contend that most of these on the DOLE should be the responsibility of the Church primarily and the Republican Party secondarily. Of course Republicans want to make sure they are born and then not take care of the problem, while Democrats recognize that “nip that problem in the bud” before it becomes a problem is a stupid but necessary solution to the uneducated rabble. To which the Republicans cry Murder.
Good ole USA went to war, blew up the banking system and left millions under financial pressure, which has been foreseen and discussed on this blog and other venues, but ignored by politicians and “those unaffected” Well those unaffected are becoming less and less as their precious offspring cannot pay off the college debt or get a decent job, while those that have stuck it out in Dayton deal with the detritus of terrible American Policy since Ron Reagan was elected .
I also think these problems are moving up the food chain, but it seems to me that more lives were ruined by Bernie Madoff and Goldman Sachs than by 3 idiots that broke into The Next Wave.
Maybe we should solve the problem by gassing everyone on welfare and in jail and then start over. Too bad we got rid of the Incinerators, but that is another topic for another day.

How did we as a society treat the miscreants who broke into your business David? We provided them with a lawyer at our expense, fed them while they were in the slammer without requiring any public service in return then flung open the jail doors to jump start another reign of havoc. And if the father to be (if in fact he is telling the truth) gets sent off the the London Correctional Facility, then society will reward baby mama with ADC checks, SCHIP health and dental care, and public schooling funding that is twice what students get in the suburbs. Some societies punish crime, dear David, while this society encourages it by subsidies. The Old Bandito thinks you are flat wrong about how to judge a society; judge a society on how it treats the victims of the governments’ mis-, mal- and non-feasance. And in this case, El Davido, that happens to be you. And from your narrative, we can conclude that while you are holding the bag for ruined equipment, higher insurance premiums and a decreased sense of safety. And you are also wrong about who has dropped the proverbial ball; it isn’t your country that has failed, it is the government you constantly champion…..
It’s folly to think you can move to a “safe area” and this can’t / won’t happen.

Greg…I want no person to be “on the dole”. I want people to be left alone and left with their own money. Stop stealing my stuff and giving it to anyone. I am a proponent of freedom and liberty. I decry force and coercion against every individual. To say that my desire to stop funding and enabling miscreants is like Hitler’s desire to exterminate “undesirables” is to turn reality on it’s head. I want everyone free to act in whatever way they want so long as they do not violate the natural rights of another human being. At that point, they should be dealt with swiftly and fairly.
