The great thing about Web 2.0- is you find one site- then you check a comment- and get taken to another site- apparently someone in Ohio is talking about realistic goals for “redeveloping downtowns”- and the answer isn’t more surface parking. Here is the link:

I’ll be looking at this site some more- but, my take is that we need to start taxing surface parking lot operators at a value of what could be there- rewarding those who build parking with retail on the first floor- and housing on top.
This isn’t a set in stone idea- just a concept, that would need to be massaged to fit the overall regional goals.

Another great site to check out is http://www.urbanohio.com — more specifically, the forum section of the site. I’ve been on the site for a couple of years now, and it is a great, well-informed group of people who truly believe in Ohio’s cities.
I just heard on the radio that NCR is giving Hawthorne Hill back to the Wright family. For years it has been used for corporate guests. Is this any indication that they may actually be leaving town or am I just reading in to it too much?
Phil: there are rumors that NCR may sell their Terradata division to HP. I don’t know if it is true or not but it certainly makes sense.
David: I don’t know if more taxes are the answer, same said for more incentives.

There is alot of interesting stuff out there regarding cities and their efforts to curb sprawling development while encouraging urban development. One thing that strikes me after researching this stuff is that: Dayton is not alone. There are many cities with the same challenges we have. Knowing this along with the fact that Dayton has so many positive things going on (no help from our media) makes it less difficult to have hope for our city’s future.
Another good site to check out is http://www.smartcityradio.com – a weekly, hour-long public radio talk show that takes an in-depth look at urban life, the people, places, ideas and trends shaping cities. You can download any of the past shows, and they have very interesting and relevent interviews with people that actually do have a background in the subject.
